About Jess Todtfeld:
Todtfeld’s expertise comes from producing experts to go up against Bill O’Reilly on the Fox News Channel. He is also behind The Daily Show’s “Pundit School” with Jon Stewart, an educational seminar some of those on the meltdown list should have taken. To avoid being on next year’s list, click on the above highlighted area to link you directly to the Comedy Central tutorial, but first, see who got it right and made Todtfeld’s Top 5 SURPRISING RISES TO THE TOP for 2011.
#5 Rebecca Black
An overnight internet sensation with her “Friday” song that got her on the Tonight Show, then allegedly making a million dollars, and giving it to charity. This shows the power of social media and that a-13-year-old unknown can be famous worldwide and overnight…and rich. This is something many others who appeared often in the media where unable to do.
#4 Occupy Wall Street-ers
While not all of their coverage was complimentary, received and continue to receive daily, worldwide coverage. In fact, their movement spread to cities all across the world. The idea of the 99% was very inclusive. Of course, people showing up wearing face paint, stilts or dressing like Vikings muddled the message at times.
#3 Pippa Middleton
While the royal wedding wasn’t about her, it quickly became about what’s next…her! Pippa came out of nowhere to be 2011′s most eligible bachelorette. She received the kind of media attention that public relations companies would salivate over.
#2 Steve Jobs
While out of the spotlight most of the year and a big focus after death, Jobs managed to launch two game changers, the iPad 2 and the iPhone’s Siri. After his death, he jumped to an almost mythical status. Word has it… Jobs left behind at least 3 years worth of plans. We’re nowhere done hearing and experiencing about his innovations.
Runners up: Tiger Moms, The Old Spice Guy, Lindsay Lohan but too obvious. She did what she always does.
#1 MEDIA WINNER, THE KARDASHIANS
Perhaps to some a sure bet for the EPIC MELTDOWN LIST but instead they made Todtfeld’s #1 SURPRISING RISE TO THE TOP. While famous for being famous, they have parlayed into an empire. While people may say they don’t like the Kardashians, the media and the public have been voting with attention…and that gave the Kardashians the #1 spot for 2011.
So who then made the Top 5 EPIC MEDIA MELTDOWN LIST?
#5 Pepper Spraying cops
UC Davis and Occupy Wall Street protesters were the recipients of pepper spray. But in 2011, video and stills have the power to go worldwide instantly. These pictures have become iconic.
#4 Penn State Coach Sandusky
In 2011 he went from hero to villain. But, we got to see and hear him melt down in front of the world, calling into Bob Costas’ show, not being able to answer the question if he’s attracted to young boys… pretty bad. This guy ruined his reputation, life, and had a terrible year in the media.
#3 Rupert Murdoch
A world-wide media empire was rocked to its foundation after news that some of his UK reporters had been tapping voice mail messages possibly going as far back as 2002. Fallout: A newspaper with 168 years behind it fell, advertisers pulled their millions, many were forced to resign, a huge deal to buy a satellite company was ruined, and the fate of control of the company remains questionable.
#2 Charlie Sheen
By his own definition, Charlie Sheen might actually be “winning” but for most of the year he was losing. His drug fueled meltdown lost him a highly-rated TV gig and the millions that went with it. While he had a few months of non-stop media coverage, it was mainly showing his decline. There is hope though. Sheen signed a deal for a new TV show “Anger Management” and was even vacationing during the holiday season with his ex-wife and children. Will he turn it around for 2012? We vote him best candidate for a full 180. For more Todtfeld Charlie Sheen commentary on Fox News Channel, click here
Runners up: Rick Perry from his oops moment to his anti-gay, Brokeback jacket wearing campaign ad, Perry had one bad moment after another. Oprah Winfrey – Her OWN network has struggled in the ratings. Her friend Gayle left the channel.
#1 MEDIA LOSER FOR 2011 is Anthony Weiner. EPIC MEDIA MELTDOWN!
From respected congressman to internet photographer, Anthony Weiner’s meltdown played like theater across all media this year. The pictures speak a thousand words, and most of them are cheating words. He chased women on Twitter and accidentally broadcast the evidence to the world. Every step of this scandal was a textbook media no-NO. What’s worse is that Weiner ended up with no reality show and no TV gigs as news analyst. Congressman Anthony Weiner is the #1 Media Loser for 2011.
